Modern Foreign Languages

We want to support and equip our children to be global citizens, foster their curiosity of other countries and deepen their understanding of the world. Our focus is for children to make substantial progress in one core language which is French. In Years 3 to 6, children are taught to express their ideas, thoughts and opinions in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in orally in in writing. Our teaching provides opportunities for children to learn new ways of thinking in order to communicate in a foreign language. This creates a solid foundation for language learning to be built upon in Key Stage 3 and beyond, eventually enabling children to work successfully alongside other nationalities and broaden their horizons to study and work in other countries.

We follow the Rising Stars French scheme which provides a full and rich curriculum programme and ensures a coherent progression of skills and knowledge from years 3 to 6.

The intent includes aspects not directly related to French but which are often highlighted through learning another language. For example, the Christian Value of respect for another country and its culture is fundamental when learning another language. Children will require great courage and perseverance to speak in another language in front of their class and in turn, their peers will demonstrate compassion whilst listening.

The strands coming from our Biblical Vision of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31-32) are relevant to how we act when communicating in another language, as we speak the truth and encourage acts of kindness and inclusivity.
