School Uniform Information

School Uniform 2023-25

At Chevening, school uniform plays an important part in promoting our school identity as well as unifying appearance; our aim is for this to continue in ways that are affordable and accessible to all families, especially in the current economic circumstances but also into the future.  School leaders consulted Chevening families about proposed changes and, following feedback, have extended the phasing-in period to support family budgets. The changes are our response to the DFE’s required review and reduce the number of logo-related items, without banishing Chevening's ‘heraldic dolphin fish’ to obscurity. Likewise, leaders have sought ways to respond to important points raised in feedback: durability, out-of-school use and commonality of colour.

Uniform can instil pride and purpose, as well as being practical for school-related activities. As the curriculum transforms from the initial play-based approach in EYFS to more formally preparing children for a variety of Secondary Schools, a progression in uniform helps to prepare children for change, enabling them to practice important life-skills and learn resilience, important elements of becoming Secondary-ready. Change needs to be practised and managed well; the extended phasing-in period has been introduced to support this. Likewise, time and support for developing these skills will be built into curriculum time.

The agreed changes are:

  • A new PE kit for ALL children; launching in September 2023 as mandatory for new Class R entrants and optional for all other pupils, becoming mandatory for all in September 2025.
Horncastles will stop ordering/stocking current PE kit and will offer the new dry-fit T-shirts in the four House colours (red/yellow/green/blue) and navy-blue shorts and skorts. Horncastles will be the sole stockist of the new PE kit.
  • A move to plain light blue polo shirts for Key Stage 1 children; launching in September 2023 as mandatory for new Class R entrants and optional for all other KS1 pupils, becoming mandatory for all KS1 pupils in September 2025.
Horncastles will stop ordering/stocking the current logo polo shirt and will offer a plain version. Plain light blue polo shirts are available from other suppliers.
  • A move to plain light blue shirts and school ties for Key Stage 2 children; launching in September 2023 as an option for ALL Key Stage 2 pupils, becoming mandatory in September 2025.
Horncastles will stop ordering/stocking the current logo polo shirt and will offer plain light blue shirts (long/short sleeves). Plain light blue shirts are available from other suppliers.
  • In support of the change, each Key Stage 2 child will be issued with either one elasticated or traditional school tie. Replacement ties will only be available from Horncastles.
  • Logo items (ie coats, kagools, PE bags and KS2 rucksacks) will no longer be requirements of the school uniform list, enabling families to make their own choices. We ask that ALL items are clearly named and that ruck sacks/PE bags are suitably sized for our small cloakroom spaces.
NB Key Stage 1 logo book bag IS still required.

Please ensure all clothing is clearly labelled.

Chevening's PTFA has a stock of many pre-loved items of current school uniform. Please ask your Class Rep or the School Office team if you are looking for something specific.
